Storm Prep Checklist for Louisiana Homes

If you live in South Louisiana, storms are part of life. A little work before the season starts can save a lot of trouble later. Use this checklist to get your home ready, and to know what to do once the weather clears.

Before hurricane season

Trees and yard

  • Trim dead or overhanging branches, especially any that hang over the roof, driveway or power lines.
  • Have leaning or damaged trees looked at before a storm makes the decision for you.
  • Pick up loose items in the yard that wind can throw, like furniture, planters and toys.

Roof, gutters and drainage

  • Clean gutters and downspouts so water can drain away from the house.
  • Make sure downspouts empty away from the foundation.
  • Look for loose shingles, flashing, soffit or fascia, and get them repaired.
  • Notice where water collects during heavy rain. A French drain or new drain line may help.

Doors, windows and openings

  • Check weatherstripping and caulking around doors and windows.
  • Know how you’ll protect windows if a strong storm is coming.
  • Make sure garage doors close and latch properly.

Power and supplies

  • If you have a generator, test it before you need it.
  • Never run a generator indoors, in a garage or near windows and doors. Exhaust can build up and cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Keep flashlights, batteries, water and a first aid kit where you can find them.

Paperwork and photos

  • Take photos or a video of your home and belongings now, inside and out.
  • Keep insurance policies and important documents in a waterproof bag or saved online.

After the storm

  1. Stay safe first. Watch for downed power lines and stay away from them. Assume any line is live.
  2. Document damage. Take photos of everything before cleanup or repairs.
  3. Prevent more damage. Cover roof or window openings and dry out wet areas as soon as it’s safe.
  4. Call your insurance company to start a claim if you need to.
  5. Get repairs scheduled. Fallen trees, damaged soffit and fascia, siding, fences and drywall are all things we handle.
