French Drains, Gutters and Standing Water: Fixing Drainage Around Your Louisiana Home

Heavy rain and flat ground make standing water a common problem around homes in Livingston and East Baton Rouge parishes. Water that sits near your foundation can lead to soggy yards, mosquitoes, damaged landscaping and, over time, problems with the slab or framing. Here’s how to figure out what’s going on and how it’s usually fixed.

Why water collects

  • Flat lots: water has nowhere to go, so it sits.
  • Clay soil: it absorbs water slowly, so heavy rain runs off and pools.
  • Gutters and downspouts: clogged gutters overflow, and short downspouts dump water right at the foundation.
  • Grading: ground that slopes toward the house sends water in the wrong direction.

Find the source first

Walk your yard during a heavy rain. Look for where water spills off the roof, where downspouts empty and where puddles form first. Many drainage problems start at the gutters, and fixing those is often the simplest and cheapest place to begin.

Common fixes

  • Clean and repair gutters: clear clogs, fix sagging sections and seal leaks.
  • Extend downspouts: carry roof water several feet away from the house, or tie it into an underground line.
  • Regrade: reshape the soil so it slopes away from the foundation.
  • French drain: a trench with perforated pipe in gravel that collects water underground and carries it to a better spot.
  • Solid drain lines: buried pipe that carries water from downspouts or low spots to the street or another outlet.

What a French drain install involves

  1. Plan the route: decide where water will be collected and where it can safely go.
  2. Locate utilities: buried lines are marked before any digging starts.
  3. Dig the trench: by hand or with a mini excavator for longer runs.
  4. Lay the pipe: gravel and pipe go in at a steady slope so water keeps moving.
  5. Backfill and restore: the trench is covered and the yard is cleaned up.

When to call a pro

  • Water reaches your foundation or gets into the garage or house.
  • The same spots stay soggy for days after rain.
  • You see cracks, sinking or erosion near the slab.
  • You’re not sure where the water is coming from.
